Half off. I use a dual-stage controller in the chest freezer I ferment in as the garage can get too chilly during the winter.

Does it cycle a heating coil or something? I've never really understood how the heating portion of the controller is effective if the container being controlled is just a cold-making apparatus.

You can set two different set points, one for cooling, one for heating. I plug the freezer into the cooling side, and a light bulb hanging in the freezer into the heating side, and can keep the temp within 1 degree differential.

Ah, i get it. So you're hand's off on the heating side as well as the cooling side. My idea involved a lightbulb as well but i was going to have my controller basically fight the lightbulb in the winter just like it would in the Summer, except from the inside.

Your setup is a bit more automatic, and will make sure you aren't burning through lightbulbs like crazy i suppose.
