I'd imagine building one would be just as easy as buying one, probably cost the same too. It just won't look pretty like the distributors Stubby sells.

Stubby sells the good ones with backflow prevention. Incredibly important to stop any beer from accidentally shooting into your gas lines.
Ask Steve if he thinks that is a useful feature.

$55 or so for a sexy looking manifold from Stubby is worth it. That way you can keep all yo kinds of funk separated, fo sho! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFwkv14u3b4

I did a 3way manifold, with on/off valves and check valves with dual regulators. that way I can run 3 kegs at 11psi, and a 4th keg at a different pressure (usually 30 for force carbonation)

The valves alone are 10 bucks so defiantly not worth building. Be careful there are many out there that looks the same at half the price but don't have check valves! Defeats the purpose.

You will die if you do not have check valves. They are very important.
Also, check yourvalve. Before you wreck yourvalve.

I wondered.... As long as im careful about moving them around so theres no backflow... I was just considering one for now until i can grab a valve distributor

I did that for quite a while before I got my manifolds. If you use clear gas hose that helps too, you'll know if you get any back flow :)

Can 3/8 id vinyl hose be used for co2

Yes, CO2 can use anything that fits. I typically use the braided 1/4" line from Lowes. It works great and you can see if beer ever gets pushed back in the lines because you overfilled a keg.
On a side note if you get beer in your gas lines, immediately flush your gas lines with sanitizer. Trust me its worth the effort.

I shall do that because i did get some in the line.... Should the newly filled keg beer level be just below the gas in tube?

There is a line inside the kegs that show roughly the 5 gallon mark. You want to leave room on the top for co2 to properly carb the beer.
Yes, flush immediately. Those gas lines are now just bacterial infection distributors at this point.
