They brew a wide variety of ales and lagers that focus quite effectively on quality and craft — and I’ve become a big fan of this Colorado brewery.
Avery’s Out of Bounds Stout seemed like a good palate cleanser after a week of Belgian style ales. This Irish Dry Stout is a regular feature of the Avery lineup and boasts a rich, roasted taste.

This big, roasty stout takes flavor to the extreme. We aren’t afraid to use plenty of rich roasted barley and a mountain of hops to give this full-bodied stout that little extra something you’ve been looking for in a beer.
A line of text at the bottom of the label answers, “Yeah, it is!” — but, as Douglas Adams fans may recognize, sometimes it isn’t the answer but the question that eludes us (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notable_phrases_from_The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_t he_Galaxy). Is this a great tasting stout? Is this beer truly “out of bounds” for flavor? At 5.1% ABV, is this the richest session beer you can imagine? Take your pick.
Out of Bounds Stout pours black — would you expect anything less? The stout is very dark, completely opaque, topped with a tan, brown head that fades into creamy clumps. Coffee and roasted malt waft from the glass, but there is a sweet vanilla undertone to the aroma that keeps my nose hovering.

Bitter chocolate and the barest hint of caramel malt smooth out the edges. The beer isn’t viscous or syrupy, but there’s a fullness and creaminess to the mouthfeel that demands a slow savor.
If you’re looking for a sweet stout, turn away. This is dry, roasted, and bitter (51 IBU). Your tongue will be attacked by hops at the end of each sip.
