Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer - Urbock
A smoked bock beer for Bamberg's strong beer season (October through December). Matured for months in ancient rock-cellars underneath Bamberg and tapped freshly from the oakwood cask. Similar to, but much bigger than the classic Maerzen style.

Served/Sold:
Available October through early January (holy three kings) from the wooden barrel in the historical brewery tavern. In bottles in a few selected retailers, in some taverns and in the Schlenkerla-Webshop. In addition export to Finland and the USA.

I've never had the Urbock but I have had the Märzen and it was fantastic!

I do have a very small supply. I think I still have a few UrBock, and one or two each of the Helles, Marzen and Weizen. Then there is the 5l mini keg.

I try to buy at least 1 mixed case per year.

now that's funny. If you like that, then you will go HOLY COW once you open this. Now I say this without having the chance to sample Shiner yet. Regardless, there are few to come close to Schenkerla.

90% Rauchmaltz
10% Caramunich
25IBU bittering only, nearly any high aa variety will work
mash at 152-154
OG 1055
German Lager Yeast 52 degrees for 4 weeks, crash, keg and lager another couple of weeks.
(for those of you that might recall, Big Brew Big Gumbo 2008)

Goebal Liquor in Wichita KS used to have some but it looks like they are not carrying new stock. International Wine in Springfield has all 4 (wink wink, going on 9/12) and I also get some from a couple of stores in VA whenever someone is driving to that area. The store in Charlottesville VA carries 5L mini kegs of the urbock (so beautiful, i cannot bring myself to open it, temptation will get the best of me in the not too distant future)
