Default Official 16th Annual Iron Mash Competition Dates & Rules

So, what is Iron Mash?
This will be the 16th Iron Mash competition, and the 14th year that Rahr and Sons has hosted the Cap & Hare Iron Mash competition, thank you Rahr & Sons!
The Iron Mash Competition was started with the intention to be a fun, competitive brewing event, to build camaraderie among brewers from the different home brew clubs across North Texas, and to promote the overall joy of home brewing while challenging brewers to brew a beer in the field with unique and specialty ingredients.

Central to the Iron Mash competition is the fact that brewers are provided all brewing ingredients the morning of brew day. Each brewing team is provided the same “competition box” that contains a combination of grains, adjuncts, hops and “specialty” ingredients that are uniquely selected each year to challenge the brewers.

The brewing teams then design a beer based on current BJCP style guidelines, determine how the specialty ingredients are going to be used, and submit their recipe to the competition coordinator - in 90 minutes! The brewing teams then brew the beer on-site at Rahr & Sons. The brewing teams take their wort home to ferment, and submit a sample of the beer 3 months later for evaluation. The winners are announced at the Awards party a few weeks later, where the brewing teams re-convene to sample the finished beers with food-pairings they have prepared (yet another unique and fun aspect to the competition!), and vote on the “Brewer’s Choice” award for the best beer poured at the Awards Party as determined by the brewing participants.

The goal of the competition is to produce a beer using only the ingredients provided, with emphasis on using the specialty ingredients. The beers are evaluated on base style and how the specialty ingredients were used. A key element of the judging process is to evaluate the use and complementary aspect of the specialty ingredients with the base beer style brewed.

Key Dates to Remember for this years’ Iron Mash Competition:
Saturday, 30 September, 2017 – Iron Mash Registration Opens
Sunday, 22 October, 2017 – Iron Mash Brew Day at Rahr & Sons Brewery
Saturday, 20 January, 2018 – Entries due at Texas Brewing Inc. by 5pm
Sunday, 28 January, 2018 – Iron Mash Awards Party at Rahr & Sons

16th Annual Iron Mash 2017 Competition Information and Rules

Registration
Registration Opens Saturday, 30 September at 9am
Registration Fee: $60 p/Brewing Team

Registration will open on-line on the Cap and Hare Website under the Competition Talk Forum. The post will have a link for you to register and pay for your team.

Iron Mash Participants must register as a Brewing Team, there is a maximum of 5 members per team. Team members can be changed up to the Iron Mash brew day when the ingredients kits are distributed. All Teams will receive the same ingredients kit and base grain options on brew day.

The first 25 teams to register and pay will be in the competition. Once the 25 team limit is reached, the registration site will not allow any additional registrations. Please PM me if you wish to be on a waiting list. If for some reason a team needs to drop out of the competition the registration fee will be refunded if a team on the waiting list accepts an invitation to register. The number of teams who have registered and paid by Thursday 12 October will be the final roster of teams to compete.

If a team has to drop out past the 12 October deadline they will not be refunded their money but have the option to transfer their entry to another team as long as we are notified that it is being done.

Again this year will be a “Pro-Brewer” Team made up of local professional brewers have been invited to brew an Iron Mash beer on Brew Day! While the Pro-Brewer Team will not be competing for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place, they will be challenged to brew a beer on brew day along with the competition Teams. They will receive an ingredients kit, be required to submit a recipe, and brew on-site on Brew Day. This should be a great opportunity for homebrewers and pro-brewers to spend some time together. The Pro-Brewer Team will bring a sample of their beer to the Awards Party, and will be eligible to participate in the “Brewer’s Choice” award. The Pro-Brewer Team will participate in a Technical Panel at the Awards Party to discuss their experiences of “home brewing” for the day, recipe development, and use of the specialty ingredients.
