Default The Covey on NBC

BREWERS IN THE NEWS

FORT WORTH - The Covey Restaurant & Brewery was featured recently in a premium television spot on local NBC affiliate KXAS (Channel 5) in their "Around Town" segment, airing just before the opening of Saturday Night Live.

The full video as well as a short online write-up is available on NBC's website as the feature entitled "One Brewmaster and a Chef: The Covey."

I'll be honest, I didn't think his beers were all that special. Good, definitely (obviously good enough to warrant the awards he's won), but there's just something missing, IMO.

It's possible that my opinion is skewed because there seems to be no emphasis at all on the beer in terms of training the bartenders or wait staff, at least not in my experience.

More importantly, I wonder if maybe all the publicity they're getting is indicative of a pent-up demand for more brewpubs in the area. Since they're pretty much the only game in town (except for the chain "brewpubs" like Humperdink's and BJ's), they get the lion's share of the coverage.

What I'm saying is -- our club has at least two trained culinary people and multiple national award winning brewers -- get off your asses and start a gastro-brew-pub!

I kind of agree. Their beers are tasty, but with the exception of a couple of them, I think they are somewhat lacking.

I like a lot of the covey's beers (the smoked stout he had a few months back, in particular, was AMAZING), but it's too nice and expensive for my tastes.

Marble countertops? Really? There's no local neighborhood hangout feel. Everytime I'm there I feel like I'm at some fancy event.

Plus I'm surprised at the lack of beer events. Rahr (and other breweries/brew pubs) seem to have/be involved in various beer events and festivals fairly often, but I never see anything from the covey at, say, bluebonnet. It's almost as if they care more about being part of the TCU/Hulen scene and not the larger craftbrew scene.

That was pretty much by design. Jamie wanted to expand the concept of an upscale restaurant that also brewed and served its own beer.

Not every place has to be a dark, smokey, faux-Irish pub. Variety is good.

He should have dropped the restaurant space and just made it a big upscale bar, every time I have been in there few tables are occupied in the dining area (sometimes one or none). I happen to like most of his beers especially the Vienna, although even that beer lately has been hopped to the point it probably doesn't fit style guidelines. Pete, when is the last time you were there? The bartenders have vastly improved on their beer knowledge, although the wait staff could still use some help. I also agree he needs to step up and get involved with some local homebrew club activities.

Variety is good, but community (brewing and non-brewing) involvement is better.
